Open Innovation

Professor Henry Chesbrough who developed the concept of open innovation, states: ‘Open Innovation is the use of purposive inflows and outflows of knowledge to accelerate innovation. With knowledge now widely distributed, companies cannot rely entirely on their own research, but should acquire inventions or intellectual property from other companies when it advances the business model.’

This notion of open innovation can be applied by companies, but can also be made operational for multi-stakeholder networks or innovation eco-systems that try to tackle complex societal challenges. (Social Innovation) Opportunity Scan

i-propeller has developed the Social Innovation Opportunity Scan. It is a tool to help companies to identify which societal challenges they are best positioned to tackle based on their own strengths and competencies and on a number of criteria. The social innovation opportunity scan performs an in-depth analysis of the company values, the external context for its operations and internal strengths of its divisions. As a result the client receives a clear assessment, in the form of a report that allows them to prioritize their actions for any given challenge. The scan is a strategic exercise performed by top-level management.
